Mileage Upgrades for Business Class travel to Europe Differ Widely
On flights to Europe, most airlines permit mileage upgrades to Business Class, but there are huge discrepancies between the actual value of one mileage upgrade versus another.
Some carriers require that you pay inflated fares if you want to upgrade, while others do not.
Some carriers now impose a cash surcharge. Another allows a double-miles upgrade with the lowest fares.

A few examples of how policies can vary one carrier to the next when upgrading to Business Class flights:
Air Canada doesnt offer mileage upgrades, so if mileage upgrades to Business Class travel are important to you, this is not your preferred carrier.
Air France does not permit upgrades with its lowest fares, but you can upgrade to Business Class travel for 50,000 miles round-trip with K fares - often not more than $1,200.
For 35,000 frequent flyer miles each way, Lufthansa will upgrade you to Business Class travel from any fare except its lowest (S and W fares).
