There are many ways to upgrade on Northwest, and sometimes you might find a valuable opportunity right in your email inbox.

In an effort to introduce new members to the Northwest Airlines WorldPerks mileage program, and rein in some who have strayed, the carrier is running a promotion where teamwork can help participants score up to 20,000 bonus miles—enough to net you a Business or First Class upgrade.

Each team in the “Great Race” will include three players who haven’t earned Northwest Airlines WorldPerks miles since Jan. 1, 2006, and a captain (for whom the miles-earning restrictions don’t apply). The objective is for the team to travel 25,000 miles collectively, for which each member will receive 20,000 bonus frequent flyer miles. For less ambitious teams, there are also rewards at 2,500, 5,000, 15,000, and 20,000 levels.

Here are some paraphrased highlights from the long list of very specific terms and conditions you’ll certainly want to read carefully: Captains must register their teams for this promotion by May 15, 2008. All qualifying travel must be completed by May 31, 2008. Qualifying travel must be a round-trip flight on paid, published economy, Business, or First Class fares on Northwest-operated flights ... I could go on and on, but let Northwest tell you about it at: : http://www.nwa.com/cgi-bin/greatrace.cgi

If this plan works for you and your team, it’s a good incentive. Have fun.

The least you can do to get in the upgrade game is to make sure you get as many airlines’ promotional mailings as possible. For Northwest, go to: https://www.nwa.com/cgi-bin/wp_enroll.pro?Country=US

I am a platinum on AA and US Air and a gold on CO and Delta. I like your publication and use for overseas hints when I can. But you don't ofer many hints for the slug stuck in a non-hub city that slugs his way across the US going from small US town to small US town. I live in New Orleans, travel homeport hell, and need use a connection to almost everywhere I fly - relying on hubs like ATL, DFW, MIA, Charlotte and ORD. Maybe a section or a perspective for guys like us every month would be nice. The "bigs" relying more on regional jets for travel on short hops and more and more on long hopsnow, around the interior US is killing guys like me who travel every week but have to squeeze into these small jets. Embraer is a dirty word!

I truly agree w/ DPoulin. I travel more domestic than abroad. Even in leisure I would like to fly 1st class/bus for cheap. How can I get a bus class ticket for my wife when she travels solo? Give us a good section on this on a regular basis(for bus&leisure).

i will agree with these other posts that most of my travel (95%) is domestic and is connection-based via ATL, MEM, or IAH. Because I am not in a hub city, am i just stuck for not getting good deals? also, is there a good way to maintain elite status on airlines like delta, with average ff programs, without busting up a chunk of cash?
